It was 2003. Mark was living in a photo studio in northern Germany. The winter was dark and cold, his job was wearing him down, and he needed an escape. Sculpting the surf and skate culture of Southern California was only meant to be a hobby, but a collaboration with the streetwear brand Vans put our sculptures in stores around the world. Accidentally, coarse was born.

Flake was hand-sculpted by Mark in 2003 and never sold or released, remaining in the coarse vault for 20 years. To celebrate two decades of vinyl storytelling we are releasing this bust for the very first time in three unique editions.

With splashes of blood across his face and chest, Pain [199] is a replica of the original monochrome bust from 2003, re-sculpted with new techniques. Loser [299] reimagines Flake in dreamy blues and pinks with classic coarse eyelashes beneath his closed eyes.

A special Walnut [9] edition brings Flake into the glossy world of our original sculptures. Handmade entirely in our Los Angeles studio, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece in our gallery-quality walnut series.
